Sharps
Sharps are medium length needles. They are the most commonly used hand sewing needles. # 12 Sharps are also used by tattoo artists in applying tattoos.

Betweens
Betweens are shorter needles, used for detailed handwork, such as fine stitching on heavy fabric. Used in tailoring and quilting. Sizes 7, 8 and 9 betweens are quilting needles.

Crewel or Embroidery
Crewel (Embroidery) needles are identical in length and thickness to Sharps but have a longer eye for easier threading with thicker embroidery threads.

Milliners, also called straw needles, are longer needles most commonly used for basting and millinery.

Tapestry needles are identical in length to Chenilles but have a longer eye for easier threading with thicker embroidery threads. Tapestry needle points are blunted.

Chenille
Chenille needles are the same as tapestry needles, but have a sharp point for heavy embroidery on closely woven fabric. Looping needles are size 18 chenilles.
